Valentines Day History

On February 14 every year, Valentine's Day is celebrated mostly all over the world. On this day people exchange flowers, gifts, Valentine cards, chocolates or other gifts with the person they love. However, most people celebrate this day in the name of St. Valentine without knowing who this saint is and what is the history of this Valentine Day.

This day is also related to Geoffrey Chaucer’s circle of romantic love. According to the author, Henry Ansgar Kelly, of this Chaucer and the Cult of Saint Valentine book, it was only Chaucer who associated Valentine with romance.

One of the legends says that Valentine was a priest during the third century and he served Rome.  During that time Emperor Claudius II thought that unmarried soldiers are better than the married solders and he said no marriage for the young soldiers. When Saint Valentine realized the injustice done to the young soldiers, he performed marriages in secret but he was put to death by the emperor when he came to know about these secret marriages.

It is also believed because the Saint helped the Christians to escape from Roman prison, he was put to death. Another version says that Saint Valentine fell in love with the daughter of the jailer when he was confined to jail. The very first Valentine greeting was sent by this saint. He ended the note with the phrase ‘from your Valentine’ and that is being followed even today by many.

Saint Valentine’s death anniversary falls in mid February and hence, some feel this Valentine day is celebrated to mark this anniversary.

No matter what is the reason to celebrate Valentine's Day, it is second among the largest card-sending holidays celebrated across the world today.
