Motivation is an element of the human psychology that energizes an individual to perform. There are various factors that can have an impact on the level of motivation of a person. In order to gather insight to the topic, it is vital to comprehend the nature and effect of each factor.


One of the factors that influence motivation is the diversity in culture.The world has about 6000 communities and as many distinct languages. Such a difference naturally leads to diversity of vision, values, beliefs, practice and expression.

Culture forms a large part of an individual’s personality. Although the external diversities are visible outwardly in the form of color, complexion and race; the ethics lie deep within the soul of every human being. Wlodkowki and Ginsberg describe culture as ‘the deeply learned confluence of language, values, beliefs and behaviors that pervade every aspect of a person's life.’ Therefore, cultural diversity plays a very critical role in the phenomenon of motivation.

The part of the world that a person hails from largely reflects in his or her persona. The style of interaction, perceptions, interests and reactions; all vary with cultural diversity. Since culture cannot be isolated from the identity of a person, motivation obviously gets influenced by it. Therefore, managers working amidst people with diverse cultures need to not only acquire knowledge of the language but the know how of the cultures as well.

Culture and motivation seem to be so closely entangled that research conducted by many social scientists highlights that the cognitive processes as essentially cultural. The language that is part of our thought process and our communication skills are inseparable from cultural traditions and cultural perspective. In order to motivate people intrinsically, it is pertinent to gather understanding of the person’s outlook. Without this knowledge, the process of motivation becomes more of a hit and trial.

Sometimes handling a group with diversity can be quite frustrating. The leader may not get the desired results. The reason may not be lack of professionalism but simply variation in culture. In some cultures, the boss is suppose to be giving all directions and it may be impolite to make suggestions; while the same scenario may be viewed as lack of enthusiasm on the behalf of employees in another cultural set up.  Similarly, one culture may perceive raised voices during a discussion as a spirited conversation while another may see it as a mark of disrespect. Therefore, the first step to motivate diversely incoherent group is to understand that none of these perceptions are right or wrong; they are just different. Therefore, it is may be wise to communicate openly to know the different expectations and then devise a motivation plan without violating the cultural norms.
