Defination Of Motivation
The term ‘motivation’ does not really have one direct definition. This term encompasses a wide domain and its meaning transforms with reference to the context. In a larger framework, human motivation is defined as the cause that influences a person to act or engage in a particular action or behavior. |
In simple words, it is the reason why we do certain things. Much study has been carried out on this topic, as a consequence of which numerous theories of motivation have been put forth that exemplifies the meaning, characteristics and methodologies of motivation.
There are two distinct types of motivation that can be defined differently; intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is defined as the motivation that includes involvement in thought process, behavioral pattern action or reaction. This is a self driven process that requires no external lure or thrust. Examples of this type of motivation would include voluntary acts of donation, social service or any aesthetic talent. On the other hand, extrinsic motivation signifies actions that are driven by certain situations and environment. Extrinsic motivation involves the tangible and intangible attractions such as rewards, prizes and money; and respect, praise and admiration respectively.
The definition of motivation can also vary with respect to every individual. Each person in this world has a certain unique outline of motivation that proves to be his or her driving force to act. Any other form of motivation will not tempt the individual to perform or attain success. If the motivation is not in harmony with the individual’s inner self, then the person tends to lose interest in the act despite a creditable goal in sight.
With respect to these variations from one person to another, the first category of definition is linked to security. For some people building a safe and sound life is of extreme significance. They wish to rise in life as they feel much more secure in an elevated portfolio. For such individuals, motivation signifies security and support. The second category highlights achievement. For such achievement oriented people, motivation denotes an inner feeling of satisfaction with one’s accomplishments. Self contentment is a bigger motivator than reward or appreciation for this individual. The third category defines motivation as social recognition. Such people wish to stand out in a crowd. For them adulation, respect, acknowledgement and limelight are the prime motivators. Thus, motivation cannot be defined in a fixed vocabulary as the same term could mean diverse things for different people.
