Sexuality In Lifespan Stages
Human sexuality is important not just from the point of procreation, but also from the point of social relationships and interactions. Sexuality in humans is used to forge bonds, build intimacy in the physical sense and create hierarchy among those involved. |
Also, sexuality allows for people to enjoy the actual act of sex. It also is a factor in causing humans to experience emotions like love, desire, bliss and jealousy.Different psychologists have postulated different theories on sexuality in lifespan stages. The most popular is the theory postulated by Sigmund Freud. He claims from infancy to adulthood, humans go through 5 stages of sexuality. And based on any traumatic experience in any lifespan stage, the person is fixated at that particular stage of sexuality. In fact, Freud is considered to be the pioneer in the field of psychosexual development. Another famous sexual researcher named Alfred Kinsey has postulated that when it comes to sexuality, most people are not completely heterosexual or homosexual. In fact, according to Kinsey, the number of people who are completely heterosexual or homosexual is actually in the minority.
When it comes to sexuality in lifespan, it can be said that sexual identification, expressing sexuality and becoming aware of the opposite sex actually starts when a human enters the stage of adolescence. Prior to that, a human's sexuality is only in terms of understanding that he or she is a boy or girl.
Once the adolescent becomes a young adult, he or she starts looking for a mate in order to start a family. However, here not any mate will do. Instead, the person will be looking for a mate who is attractive and whom he or she desires. By middle adulthood, the person loses keen interest in sex, and only indulges in the act to satisfy certain urges. By late adulthood, the urge diminishes completely as the person is more worried about leaving behind a legacy.
